BEYOND 4FT 10IN
The ‘Beyond 4ft 10in’ series was borne out of his observations and experience working as a documentary photographer. He turned his lens on the ‘Little People’ amongst us in the society. A Dwarf is a person with an abnormally short stature and about 1 child in 50, 000 is birthed with this condition. The underlying causes of Dwarfism are metabolic and hormonal disorders which results in shortened parts of the body.
But these ‘Short statured’ individuals are confronted with immense discrimination which reinforces them as objects of mockery and targets of ridicule. These ‘Little People’ are multi-talented individuals, in the artistic landscape; dwarfs are mostly depicted as characters that are spectrum apart. A special moral and aesthetic significance attached to the misshapenness of these folks.
The project aims to deconstruct the socio-cultural stereotypes which have plagued dwarfs for decades or even centuries. To engage with the public and change the way we see, think and interact with these little people. The subjects in these series are beautiful, indisputably compelling, bold, and vivacious. The exhibition is an intrinsic look from the photographer’s point of view into both the seen and unseen, tasteful and untasteful facets of the daily lives of dwarfs.
The ‘Beyond 4ft 10in’ photo series seeks to demystify the beliefs associated with dwarfism, and celebrate Nigerians who have, in spite of the negativity linked with their diminutive stature and height, risen against the odds and created a thriving life for themselves. The exhibition strives to serve as a spring of hope by dignifying the beauty in difference and giving the 4ft members of our community a voice.
